If you’re looking to grow your email list this year, you are definitely on the right track. I talk about the importance of building a list for your small business a lot, because it is one of the best investments you can make in your business that will provide better results and longevity with your audience.
And yes, I hear it often…but HOW do I get started? And that’s what we’re going to focus on in this episode. Here are some creative ways to onboard new subscribers to your list.
I’ve talked about it before but let me reiterate WHY it is so important to build and grow an email list.
For starters, email provides a direct and personalized line of communication between you and your subscribers. It allows you to keep in touch with them and build a relationship with them.
It’s also something that you own, unlike your social media accounts. If your social account is compromised, hacked or you lose access - you have a solid list of fans that you can still connect and communicate with.
With an email list, you have the opportunity to segment your subscribers based on their interests, demographics, or their buying behaviours; which allows you to personalize your marketing messages and target specific groups of subscribers.
It’s also a cost-effective marketing strategy. Building an email list requires minimal investment and the return on investment (ROI) can be significant.
It can also increase your sales by keeping your subscribers engaged and informed about your products or services. As well as discounts, special promos, flash sales and limited offers.
And lastly, email marketing has higher engagement rates than social media. People are more likely to open and read an email than a social media post which makes email a powerful tool to engage with your subscribers and build brand loyalty.
So how do we actually get them to join our list? Here are a few creative ways you can get started on - and I will preface this by saying you’ll probably want to test out a few of these options in order to test what is resonating and converting well. I’ll also say, in my experience, don’t give up too early on your creative opt-ins. Sometimes they may take some time to build traction.
OK - so what IS an opt-in? You’ve probably heard the term opt-in, freebie, lead magnet and they all mean the same thing. It is something that you provide to your audience in exchange for their email address.
So let’s chat about some opt-in options you could create:
1 - Cheatsheets or checklists
2 - workbooks - something printable
3 - a PDF guide - with instructions on how to achieve (insert your niche here)
4 - templates - customizable templates to save time
5 - video tutorial - show how to do something/explain
6 - live workshop or presentation - in your niche
7 - a quiz - to help discover something about themselves
8 - a challenge - something that is delivered in bite size pieces for a win
9 - a discount off their first purchase
10 - free shipping on your first order
A few other things to keep in mind is that your opt-in should always provide some type of win. This lends to your credibility, expertise and can show that what you’re capable of offering.
And lastly, be mindful of your opt-in / freebie whatever you want to call it, to be relevant and needed in a certain time. For example, a Spring cleaning checklist for your home makes sense in the month of March, April and May but isn’t really relevant for the fall months.
